dies lunae

On Friday night, Academy students celebrated the 4th of July by watching Boston fireworks (on TV, of course), eating classic Independence Day foods (Twinkies and watermelon), playing "class warfare" kickball and blowing bubbles. As a special treat, Magister Cavedo and the RAs read and performed a modified version of "The Three Little Pigs" with puppets as a bedtime story. After classes the next day, the XX Legion came to Randolph-Macon College to teach students about Roman life: they explained the roles of both women and army soldiers. Discipuli celebrated convivium later that night, watching performances by all of their fellow Academy-mates. One highlight was Christian and Sam's Catullus poem rap. Students got to experience the pain of social hierarchy, as some ordines (i.e. the nobiles) got to receive and eat their food before the plebes. After this delicious dinner, everyone participated in the tribune-held Nugae - this week, it was a dance party! Sunday morning, students once again had the opportunity to use computers; people continued joining the Academy Facebook group. At night, everyone watched Black Orpheus, observing the connections between the film and the classic myth. Students swam in the pool, worked out, and played squash during gym time today. Later tonight, Magistra Wilkins will give a presentation on Greek vases, and then students will get to make their own!

Quotes of the Day:
